A Fishing Meet Up.
Hi everyone, last weekend I got the chance to go fishing with someone, Matt the owner of bassluresuk.com who lives nearby a mark I fish, said he would pop down and join me for a couple of hours fishing.
I bought some of his paddle tails, Cornish Snaxs, and Creature Craw Baits, He makes all these lures and many more which you can see on his website.
I was fishing one of his craws, and he fished with his paddle tails, we chatted away about how he started his business and my Facebook group and website. Although we didn’t catch anything this time it was a cold but enjoyable couple of hours and a meet-up will be on for another session soon.
Out for a proper try with the Craws.
I had been keeping an eye on the weather as Storn Eowyn was coming in on Friday morning, I was determined to get a couple of hours fishing in on Wednesday morning, the weather looked good but cold, I had been researching the estuary looking for somewhere to try the craw, on Tuesday evening I found a couple of posts, David Trickey had posted on how he catches Bass on the craw, with huge success and been smashing it.
Marc Cowling had also been catching several bass on the craws and posted a video showing how he fishes with them, I watched a couple of times and took onboard what both had said. A short while after Matt sent me the same video, I sent him back an image of the area I planned to fish and he marked it as where he would try, we shared the same thoughts on that area.
So Wednesday morning came, I got my usual jobs done and headed off I had at least a couple of hours to have a go, I got down to the area a wide creek that floods with the tide, and I decided to start at a bay that fills to one side, fish that down to the area I had planned, the area has a rocky shore, with some nice weed beds and some large boulders that get submerged in the flood.
When I started fishing it was about an hour until high tide, I started with a light brown craw, but it looked too camouflaged on the bottom so I changed over to a dark red one, which showed up lovely on the bottom of the clear water. I fished along the shore and past an area of large boulders that looked like a very nice area to hold a bass. By this time the tide had started to ebb out, and I could see a nice eddy forming a few casts around this area that didn’t produce anything. I looked back to the area of boulders and there were a couple of clumps of weed showing, an underarm cast to this area around 20 – 25 meters away.
The Pause – The Take.
Reading and watching the information on fishing the craw, most seem to cast out and let it settle on the bottom, then a wind of the reel, and then pause for 3 to 10 seconds long, then another wind, it can be a slow process but a process that produces the rewards of a Bass. So the craw hit the water I left it for a few seconds as it was maybe 2 feet of water, from what I hear and read the takes of a bass vary a lot, from almost nothing to a couple of plucks to full-on smash and grab, usually a couple of seconds after the pause.
After it dropped to the bottom I gave it one wind and within a couple of seconds I had a pluck on the rod tip, followed closely by another, a smooth lift and reel and I was hooked up to my first bass on the craw. It made a couple of good efforts to get in the weed but I had my reel set a tightish drag to counter this, a few minutes battle and I landed a stunning bar of silver on the shore.

This bass was in stunning condition the best I have caught and in fine prime condition.

This was probably the 4th time I had tried the craw, getting bored too quickly with the slow retrieve and changing to something else, but today was different with the knowledge and technique I was going to put it into play and also I would like to get a bass every month this year. Boy was I rewarded with a beautiful 53 cm Bass my first on the craw and a January Bass too to kick off the year ahead.

On this occasion, I was using the craw from bassluresuk.com ( above) but they are made by other manufacturers too, and come in a multitude of shapes and sizes, the megabass sleeper craw is a very popular one too.
Conclusion.
Catching that Bass on Wednesday ticked off a couple of goals for the season, catching a bass on a creature bait and a January bass too, a very special day for me.
Thanks for reading everyone, get out there and try those craws, and tight lines @ Kernow Bass.
Stephen,
It was great to finally catch up with you on the waters edge even though it was mind numbingly cold that day. Glad you ventured out again after discussing how you were going to target a certain spot and you accomplished it to perfection. Well done catching your first creature bait bass and I am sure you will catch many more now you’ve been “bitten” by the craw bug.
Matt
